Building the Bonds That Make a Business Great

“The cost of lacking trust: Ever-present suspicion, double-riveted legal agreements, caution and caginess in interpersonal dealings—the touchstones of mistrust—can slow things down, drive away the most trustworthy people, and inhibit innovation.”

—Joel Peterson

Over the course of more than four decades as a board chairman, real-estate entrepreneur, growth-capital investor, manager, teacher, father, and husband, Joel Peterson has continually developed and depended on high-trust relationships to quietly emerge as a respected leader. In THE 10 LAWS OF TRUST: Building the Bonds That Make a Business Great (AMACOM; May 10, 2016; $15.95 Hardcover), Peterson shows leaders at all levels how to avoid or reverse a devastating trust shortfall. From experience and observation, Peterson knows: “Trust doesn’t just happen. It takes initiation, nurture, evaluation, and repair…Trust can be fragile.” So, why trust? Because, as the JetBlue Chairman assures, trust works to everyone’s benefit—individual contributors, work groups, customers, suppliers, vendors—and the betterment of the whole organization.

“There is power in being trustworthy,” Peterson attests. “The satisfaction that derives from collaboration, the innovation that flows from interdependent teams, the joy that springs from knowing you can trust those with whom you work—all are well worth the effort required to understand the nature of trust and to internalize and live by its laws.”

What is trust, exactly? Joel Peterson distills this vital yet elusive quality—the essence of great leadership and sustainable business success—into simple truths. In crisp, clear, and compelling chapters, THE 10 LAWS OF TRUST offers specific ideas and behaviors that reinforce the foundations on which trust is built:

• LAW 1: Start with Personal Integrity

• LAW 2: Invest in Respect

• LAW 3: Empower Others

• LAW 4: Measure What You Want to Achieve

• LAW 5: Create a Common Dream

• LAW 6: Keep Everyone Informed

• LAW 7: Embrace Respectful Conflict

• LAW 8: Show Humility

• LAW 9: Strive for Win-Win Negotiations

• LAW 10: Proceed with Care

Throughout, examples illustrate how each trusted tenet elevates nimble startups, storied corporations, and even sinking giants. From Google’s interaction-fostering cafeteria design to Netflix’s empowering family-leave policies, from Room & Board’s mandate to let employees set their own performance measures to Autodesk’s commitment to total transparency about its financial results, a range of easy-to-replicate business practices affirm the value of trust. Culminating with action steps for restoring trust after a breach, THE 10 LAWS OF TRUST is a timely and encouraging guide to investing in high-trust relationships and reaping remarkable gains in reputation and the bottom-line.
