“My father had one job in his lifetime, I will have six jobs in my lifetime, and my children will have six jobs at the same time.” — Robin Chase, Founder of Zipcar
The Gig Economy is disrupting the way we work. That’s OK, because work is ripe for disruption. Most people in full-time jobs aren’t happy. A 2104 Gallup poll found that less than one third of employees are engaged and passionate about their jobs. A majority of Americans haven’t been satisfied with their jobs since 2005. Many employees don’t feel secure in their jobs, and although they have a steady income, they live paycheck to paycheck. Full-time employees are given paid time off, but 41% don’t take it all, and more than half of Americans haven’t taken a vacation in the past year. They have access to retirement savings plans, but don’t save enough for even a few years of retirement.
Full-time work isn’t working, at least not for full-time employees.
The Gig Economy offers us a new way of work that does seem to be working. Recent surveys of independent workers indicate that they are more satisfied with their work, more engaged, and report having ‘good’ fringe benefits. They value the autonomy, flexibility and greater control they have by not being a full-time employee.
Four years ago, I created and started teaching an MBA class at Babson College called Entrepreneurship and the Gig Economy. The class was named by Forbes.com as one of the Top Ten Most Innovative Business School Classes in the country. Many of the topics in this book are based on what I teach, and many of the exercises are based on assignments that have helped my students prepare to succeed in the Gig Economy - what has led them to sell their houses and cars, quit their jobs, start new businesses, and begin to live their lives more closely aligned with their values and priorities.
How to Thrive in the Gig Economy
The intention of this book is not simply to educate you on the Gig Economy, but to guide you through it, and provide a toolkit for succeeding in it. All of the chapters have practical exercises to help you apply the concepts to your own life. The chapters are structured as independent modules, so you can read and focus in on areas that interest you or matter to you most.
