A Natural Approach for a Calmer, Happier, and More Focused Child

“By reading this book, you can benefit from the lessons learned the hard way by a dedicated autism mom and savvy clinician.”

—Elizabeth Mumper, MD, FAAP,

President and CEO, Rimland Center for Integrative Medicine,

Former Medical Director, Autism Research Institute,

What is the best way to reach, teach, and parent a child with autism? Each year, more than 50,000 families across the U.S. grapple with questions surrounding the diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Typically, autism parents respond by launching into intense therapies and relying on medications to control their child’s difficult behaviors, from lack of eye contact to moodiness to violent, angry meltdowns. While this approach succeeds at suppressing ASD’s distressing symptoms, it leaves the underlying health challenges simmering and continuing to affect their child.

Dr. Janet Lintala has devoted her career to supporting vibrant health for those living with autism—without antipsychotics, antihypertensives, antidepressants, or other potent drugs. In THE UN-PRESCRIPTION FOR AUTISM: A Natural Approach for a Calmer, Happier, and More Focused Child, Dr. Lintala shares the highly doable, holistic action plans that have profoundly improved the behavior and lives of hundreds of children and adults on the autism spectrum at her clinic—and made it possible for her son to fulfill his potential. Speaking as an autism mom as well as a clinician, she stresses to parents: “Your child must feel his best to do his best.”

As Dr. Lintala reveals, the symptoms and behaviors so common to autism, and so troubling to parents, are signs of deeper health problems—gastrointestinal (GI) dysfunction, immune dysfunction, chronic inflammation, and oxidative stress—that medications often exacerbate. Drawing on extensive research and experience, personal and clinical, she targets these hidden ASD aggravators with nonprescription treatments. “This host of physical and medical issues shouldn’t be part of who any child is,” states Dr. Lintala. “Pulling out these tacks will let your child’s personality shine through and give him the best chance of success with therapies, school, and life.”

Accessible and encouraging, THE UN-PRESCRIPTION FOR AUTISM begins with a comprehensive questionnaire to help parents identify the overlooked health issues likely to be aggravating their child’s bowel, sleep, and behavior problems. With newfound awareness of their child’s internal struggles, parents will focus on implementing a targeted action plan to help their child feel and function better. Steps include:

• Choosing from a suite of proven, natural protocols of enzymes, probiotics, and herbal supplements to restore and balance GI function, strengthen the immune system, and overcome insomnia.

• Understanding the role of nutrition in gut health, curbing their child’s food cravings and compulsions, and adopting a simple alternative to the well-known GFCF (gluten-free, casein-free) diet.

Throughout, parents will find practical tips on getting and staying organized, answers to frequently asked questions, and encouraging real-life examples. Written with empathy, THE UN-PRESCRIPTION FOR AUTISM provides parents with the insights, natural tools, and expert guidance to ease their child’s physical pain and frustrations, and tap into their child’s capacity to learn, thrive, and enjoy life.
