Develop the Resilience You Need to Succeed
Why do some people rebound from crushing setbacks to achieve remarkable feats? Why do some people experience extreme adversity and keep pushing forward? More than forty years ago, three accomplished individuals from different fields—psychology, business, and the military—set out to find answers. Their quest took them into the worlds of first responders, competitive athletes, elite special operations warriors, and trauma survivors. It drove them to re-examine legends from Andrew Carnegie to Nelson Mandela. Finally, it led them to a powerful determinant of success and happiness: personal resilience.
In STRONGER: Develop the Resilience You Need to Succeed (AMACOM 2015), George Everly Jr., Ph.D., acclaimed stress management pioneer; Douglas A. Strouse, Ph.D., business leader; and Dennis K. McCormack, Ph.D., one of the original Navy SEALs, share the answers to why some people rise above hardships and pressure with renewed determination to excel, while others fall prey to disabling self-doubt.
Informed by original research, clinical observations, and inspiring stories of highly resilient role models—baseball great Cal Ripken Jr., neurosurgeon Benjamin Carson, Department of Defense psychologist Abbey-Robbin Tillery, former Maryland Governor Martin O’Malley, Navy SEAL Foundation chairman Admiral Garry Bonelli, USA Today founder Al Neuharth, and fully recovered paraplegic Pat Rummerfield, among others—the authors offer insights into the components of personal resilience. What’s more, STRONGER shows how anyone can develop this potent life force and competitive advantage, regardless of background, circumstances, or age.
A state of mind backed by bold actions, and form of “psychological body armor,” to quote the authors, personal resilience is comprised of five interconnected factors:
1. Active Optimism. More than a hope for or even belief in a brighter future, active optimism is a mandate for change, which can become a self-fulfilling prophecy.
2. Decisive Action. Optimism is not enough. Resilience requires the courage to make difficult decisions, follow through, and take responsibility for their outcome.
3. Moral Compass. Relying on honor, integrity, fidelity, and ethical principles to guide decisions and actions in challenging situations.
4. Relentless Tenacity. Having the determination and persistence to try, try again—while at the same time knowing when to quit.
5. Interpersonal Support. Forging connections who will find hidden opportunities, lend a helping hand, provide encouragement, and bolster self-confidence.
Featuring self-assessments, specific “how to” prescriptions, and plenty of uplifting examples, STRONGER offers anyone an edge on building immunity to stress, making tough decisions under fire, accomplishing ambitious goals, motivating peak performance in others, and, above all, feeling in control and enjoying life.
