About the Authors of

From the time he wrote his first page-one article for his college newspaper, Paul B. Brown only wanted to spend his career writing feature stories and books. And for 25 years that is exactly what he did. He started out at one the country’s largest papers, before moving to national magazines. He served as a writer and editor for BusinessWeek, Forbes, and Inc., while writing books at night and on weekends. Over the years, he wrote, co-wrote, and “ghosted” numerous bestsellers, including Customers for Life with Carl Sewell.

Then, newspapers and magazines started disappearing. His backup source of income, book publishing hit a relentless stretch of upheaval. Eventually, Brown realized that the industries in which he chose to spend his life were either going away or radically changing.

A few years ago, Brown seized on the opportunity to write a book with two business leaders, Charles F. Kiefer, President of Innovation Associates, the firm that pioneered the concept of organizational learning, and Leonard A. Schlesinger, then President of Babson College, consistently ranked the number-one school for entrepreneurship by both Business Week and U.S. News and World Report. The result, Just Start: Take Action, Embrace Uncertainty, Create the Future, focused on enabling large organizations to operate successfully in extreme turmoil. It marked the start of an ongoing collaboration among the authors, with a commitment to tackling a much more widespread challenge helping people cope with an economy that is evolving faster than ever before.

With the help of Kiefer and Schlesinger, Brown wrote a series of popular blogs for Harvard Business Review and Forbes, exploring the challenges of planning a prosperous career in a job market that defies prediction. In the process, the authors began to study and interview hundreds of experts on coping masterfully with the unknown: successful serial entrepreneurs.

That research and its revelations led to OWN YOUR FUTURE: How to Think Like an Entrepreneur and Thrive in an Unpredictable Economy (AMACOM). “This book is personal to us,” Brown says. “In our own work lives, we apply the principles of thinking entrepreneurially that we describe and advocate for people who can no longer depend on continuing employment.”

A serial entrepreneur in his own right, Charlie Kiefer has created three companies and, as a management consultant and trainer, has worked to unlock the latent potential in organizations of all kinds. He is an alumnus of MIT and lives in Sudsbury, Massachusetts.

Len Schlesinger employed entrepreneurial thought and action in business, as CEO of Au Bon Pain and Limited Brands, before his career in academia. In 2013, after a five-year term as President of Babson College, he returned to Harvard Business School as a Baker Foundation Professor of Business Administration. He holds a PhD in Business Administration from Harvard Business School, an MBA from Columbia University, and a Bachelor of Arts in American Civilization from Brown University. He lives in Cambridge.

Paul B. Brown is a graduate of Rutgers College and Rutgers University Law School. He makes his home in Anna Maria, Florida, where he applies an entrepreneurial mindset to carefully creating overlapping projects to replace the work he used to have in industries that no longer exist, at least in the form he knew. When facing the end of his dream career, Paul thought his future work life would be depressing and not very lucrative. He declares: “I was happily wrong on both counts.”
