About the Author: Pamela Ryckman

For Pamela Ryckman, a freelance journalist, it all started at a women’s conference. There, she met one female senior executive who introduced her to another and then another. Defying all the unflattering stereotypes of powerful women, each one was charismatic, bold, and kind. Eager to listen and learn from the successful, stylish, and really fun women she kept meeting, Ryckman was struck when they mentioned their salons and dinner groups. Following her hunch that something exciting and meaningful was shaping women’s lives, Ryckman set out to investigate. Her research opened doors across the country, revealing a world where women—from their twenties to their seventies—joined forces to empower and advance one another. Eventually, it led her to identify a new women’s movement and find a great subject for her first book, STILETTO NETWORK: Inside the Women’s Power Circles That Are Changing the Face of Business.

“As I spoke with vibrant ladies for this book and watched them lobby for one another, I realized that every opportunity I’d gotten in journalism had come through a woman,” Ryckman reflects. “I’ve written for amazing male editors, but it was always a woman who got me through the door.” Considering all the women who shared their time, provided advice, and in numerous ways collaborated on her debut as an author, she adds, “Stiletto Network is a testament to the power of its thesis: that these networks work.”

Pamela Ryckman has written for The New York Times, Financial Times, International Herald Tribune, The New York Observer, and The New York Sun, among other publications, as well as websites like Fortune.com/CNNMoney. On April 2, 2011, she published a New York Times Sunday Business front-page story, “A Club for Women Atop the Ladder,” about Belizean Grove, a “secret society” of some of the world’s most powerful women. It was featured on the front page of the International Herald Tribune and was the #1 emailed business story for the week and one of the most emailed stories in the entire paper that month.

Before becoming a journalist, Ryckman performed strategy work for Merrill Lynch’s Global Markets and Investment Banking Group and for Goldman, Sachs & Co.’s Equities Financial and Strategic Management Group. She began her career at Mitchell Madison Group, a management consulting firm. She holds a Master of Arts in Journalism from New York University and a bachelor’s degree in Comparative Literature from Princeton.

Pamela works from home and juggles writing with caring for three young children—all boys. An avid fan and active supporter of live theatre, she is on the board of Page 73 Productions, which develops and produces new work by early-career playwrights. She also served on the board of The Alliance of Resident Theatres/New York, winner of a Tony Award for Excellence in the Theatre. She lives with her family in New York City.
