About Naomi Steiner, M.D. and Susan L. Hayes
Naomi Steiner, M.D. is a developmental-behavioral pediatrician and clinical researcher at Tufts Medical Center / University where she is also an assistant professor in pediatrics. She is interested in how children develop awareness to cope with their emotions, behavior and learning.
Dr. Steiner has a longstanding interest in bilingualism and multiculturalism, which is a topic that she enjoys teaching and discussing. After more than a decade of working closely with families in the United States and Europe around these issues she has written a book, with Susan Hayes, called 7 Steps to Raising a Bilingual Child. She is multilingual and is raising multilingual children.
She is co-director of an early developmental assessment clinic for children between zero and three years of age at the Center for Children with Special Needs, at the Floating Hospital for Children, Tufts Medical Center in Boston. This clinic evaluates primarily children on the autism spectrum and with developmental delays. She also assesses and follows up children of all ages at her general developmental clinic. These children usually have complex presentations frequently with challenging co-morbidities such as an autism spectrum diagnosis, along with anxiety, depression, ADHD, OCD, sleep dysfunctions and possible learning disabilities.
Helping children cope with stress through yoga training in schools is a special interest to Dr. Steiner. She is currently developing a project that looks at yoga training for children with emotional and behavioral issues in a school setting. She is also part of an innovative group of researchers from Harvard University and the Kripalu Center for Yoga and Health, which looks at yoga training for all children within the school setting. Additionally, Dr. Steiner researches computer-based attention-training systems in children with ADHD, one type uses EEG biofeedback (neurofeedback) and others use specific computer tasks. This research has been presented at multiple national pediatric conferences where she has spoken.
Susan L. Hayes is currently a full-time freelance writer and editor. For the past 20 years, she has honed her editorial skills at a diverse number of consumer and educational magazines, many of them for and about children, parents and teachers. She is a frequent contributor to Parent & Child, Instructor (a professional magazine for K-8th grade teachers), and Current Health (a classroom magazine for high-school students), among other publications.
While the Senior Features Editor at Woman’s Day, Hayes developed and produced all parenting-related content, including an annual joint Woman’s Day-Scholastic campaign to help parents encourage their kids to read over the summer. She also edited one of the magazine’s most popular columns, “Momfidence!,” by nationally recognized parenting expert Paula Spencer. Prior to joining Woman’s Day, Hayes was a Senior Editor at National Geographic Kids, the National Geographic Society’s award-winning magazine for 6- to 14-year-olds. She has also been a Senior Editor at Creative Classroom and worked at Scholastic creating materials for students and teachers. Her interest in using her writing and editing skills to promote education and benefit children and families goes back to the beginning of her career. Her first editorial position was an internship with the Information Services division of the United Nations Environment Programme in Nairobi, Kenya. There, she helped to develop and produce materials to celebrate and encourage grassroots conservation efforts among the nation’s youth. Hayes has been the recipient of two EdPress Distinguished Achievement Awards, which recognize outstanding editorial content in educational publications.
Equally passionate about health-related topics, Hayes frequently writes for Natural Health magazine. She has also written for Prevention and Weight Watchers.
A Dartmouth College graduate, Hayes lives in Brooklyn, NY, with her husband, who is also a writer as well as a high-school English teacher.
